Punks Sharing Iftar
Hubs and I went to our first punk show together last night. I told him he should feel honored; his first show and getting to see one of the legends of punk music (Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys) all in one night.
Since I just moved here, I had no idea of the “scene,” but everyone seemed nice. Being an all-ages venue, there were middle-aged people and very young kids there. We didn’t get injured in any of the moshing that we were only a few layers removed from. Maybe a little squished, but no harm done. We jumped, screamed, sang along and had an awesome time…
And I saw Jello Biafra. Face to face. Outside the venue. He walked past me and looked into my eyes.
And tonight, we are “sharing” an iftar (breaking of the fast) with one of hubby’s friends from work and his wife. I’m making two Pakistani/Indian dishes, Bhindi Masala (okra in spicy tomato sauce) and Murgh Cholay (chicken with chickpeas) Well, hubby is in charge of the chicken…
Yesterday was apparently “Blog Quake Day” — I’m kind of feeling weird about it. I don’t feel “right” talking about charity. But I feel like this “meme” is forcing people to talk about what they are (or aren’t) giving and doing. If someone doesn’t go along with the movement, are they seen as stingy? I am not sure about the purpose of it, really. Maybe someone can help me?

Salaaaam
(:
Bad, bad girl (sorry, didn’t mean to sound like the orkut server)… Moving blogs are we?? d: Well luckily I was at hijabman today and re-discovered you… lol
Anyways, hope married life is treating you good d: and hope your Ramadan is going good too… (: Oh and this new blog looks real cool!
Allah hafiz
i love the ‘mozlem’ punk garb (and the site too) :-)
Saara - I think I lost your blog, too… I had to reformat my old comp, where your link was.. :-( Married life is good, Ramadan good. :-) Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you found me!
Adeeba - Thanks! ;-) I guess Muslims can be punks, too, right?
: D well, actually… i haven’t posted anything on my blog for like months now, so i’m not even sure if it’s still there… lol so i’m thinking losing the url was no biggie d:
anyway… good to ’see’ you again… i’ll be stopping by more often now, inshAllah! (:
Leena! Your post reminded me of the old days.
I used to love the DKs. What did your hubby think of the show? Did people stare at your hijab
I also didn’t feel right blogging about the earthquake..although it genuinely saddens and concerns me just as much as anyone else, i think other people have said things better and more eloquently than i could. Other bloggers with much more reach have posted resources, and i just don’t feel like my blog would contribute much. My blog is mostly personal stuff, and also i don’t think too many people read it anyway. I don’t mean to sound selfish!
BTW- i didn’t know about the AMtP group. Is it only for Americans? I’m Canadian…
Saara - Maybe.. start a new blog?! Everyone should have a blog!! :-)
Um Mahtab - LOL! DK! That’s so awesome.. Hubby loved it. Since we’re quite political, he liked the “spoken word” additions and the political lyrics. I had played him some DK some time ago, so he knew some of the lyrics already. It was a great experience. And the great thing about punks: no one really stares… or cares… :-P Hubby was sporting quite a big beard, not to mention the dark skin… No one said a thing. Actually, it might have made us more approachable, as we had small conversations with a number of people before the show. :-)
I e-mailed you about the group. :-)
Thanks for the comments!
Salaam ‘Alaikum
Yer so punk rawk. If there are goth Muslims, can’t there be punk Muslims?
Wow. I am a 343 year old covert to Islam and a former punk rocker. There are more of us out there than I thought! I am married to a Saudi woman. I got involved in the punk scene about 18 years ago.
I saw the Dead Kennedys play when it cost like $3 to get into a show. Bands like TSOL, Christian Death, The Germs, Bad Brains, Black Flag. I havent been to a show for years.
Hum…..wonder what the wife would think of a punk show? Well, she is used to my tattoos, after she has the baby maybe we should try? Oi!
hey i used to be a punk, and i was a muslim at the time - but i never liked mr. biafra and his ways. wasnt he a mayor at one point, or a mayoral candidate. haha. I think the only DK song i ever liked was Kill the poor, and maybe holiday in Cambodia.
 MUSLIM PUNKS!
Abu Sinan - 34, 33, or 343 years old? :-) Can there be a “former” punk rocker? I think the spirit must stay alive. I think a lot of the same attitude is present in Islam.. (well at least for me, I was involved in political punk, which is all justice, compassion and truth.) Not to mention I am straightedge.
This show was $15, which… is expensive by punk standards, very cheap by popular concert standards..
You should try with the wife. Hubby enjoyed it and he had no idea about punk before I came around. But go slowly… I first played some CDs in the car while we were driving around, so he was used to the sound and stuff. Oi! :-P
Ayan - He did run for mayor, yeah, but didn’t win. I don’t know what you mean that you didn’t like him and his ways? Which ways? Kill the Poor and Holiday in Cambodia are two songs which display his beliefs very prominently. Unless you just like the music?
no i just mean musically - never really liked them, and those 2 songs I did appreciate.
Oh, sorry. :-)
What kind of punk music did you like then?
Oh, 34! LOL! Yeah, it is the same “I dont give a damn” attitude that got me into punk rock that gave me the ability to see into Islam as well. Dead Kennedys were never my favourite, but I’d go to almost any show just for the fun time. My favourite band was probably Social Distortion. I saw them when there were only like 50 people showing up at the show.
I have played CDs for my wife, she cannot stand it, neither can the kids. I think punk is something you are born to like and appreciate. We couldnt think of going any time soon anyway. We have a 4 1/2 month old newborn and we found out she is preggers again.
I have told her about my haircuts, colours and the way I used to dress. She thinks it is funny. All that is left from those days is the music I listen to sometimes and a lot of tattoos.
Social Distortion was (is?) another great. I don’t know if the Dead Kennedys were my favorite either. I like too many bands to mention probably.
Congrats on the children. I’m too scared to have any, so .. have fun!
What kind of tats do you have? Or do you think it’s bad to talk about them??
I’m having fun reading these comments!!! My favourite band used to be Crass. Teehee.
I also love Bauhaus, but they’re more gothy than punk. I heard Peter Murphy went Sufi, which didn’t surprise me at all. I also liked obnoxious girly bands like XraySpex & Bikini Kill for a while. I’m trying to remember what else i liked, but i’m drawing a blank, cause it’s been a few years. However, I’m still amused at “the fascist regime, that made you a moRRRRRon”.
btw, I changed you on my links to Leena’s Blog instead of What a world. Just tellin ya cause i hope you don’t think i removed you or something hehe.
Yeah these are probably some of the best comments I’ve ever had!
I would say my favorite was Crass, too. Somehow I lost all my other punk CDs except Crass and the Misfits. (Hubby bought me more after I moved in!) I brought their “Feeding of the 5000″ to Pakistan with me when I got married, lol…
I’m not against goth, since my fav group of alllll time is Depeche Mode. Sadly, I’ve never really listened to Bauhaus that much… I will try to find some of their music and start.
And Sex Pistols, who could forget? :-P
Thanks for still linking me! :-)
I love Bauhaus and Peter Murphy as well. I was into a lot of the “death” stuff, so I liked Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, .45 Grave, stuff like that.
Tattoos? Mostly celtic knotwork stuff. I was born in Europe and spent a lot of time there as an adult. Some people collect postcards, little spoons, I collected tattoos from the countries I visited. All pre Islam, of course.
yeha my fav. band was crass too hahaha - i hated social distortion. i liked the uk subs, crass, the business, the boils, so many bands i cant even remmeber now but crass was way up there!
oh sex pistols hell yeah, and you reminded me of the misfits.. great stuff. i hated the goth stuff, almost always just into the we hate government type punk rock. oh and crass’s offshot, Conflict. and umm i lost my record collection unfortunately, they were in abig box NOWHERE to be found now. sucks. mm the more modern stuff i liked was violent society, blanks77, the templars, vanilla muffins (haha stupid names huh?).
Good lord. I haven’t heard some of these band names in years. .45 Grave. Christian Death. Was just thinking of SOM the other day — this time of year always reminds me of that group. I once wrote a post, maybe in march of this year or so?, theorizing about the large number of punks / goths and hip hoppers who have converted to Islam.
