oh what a world

Dude. Seriously.

OMG POOL SEASON!

I’m so so so happy that pool time is here. The weather the past few days has been beautiful; today was near 90°F! — great. I swam (in my cute suit) nearly non-stop for three hours today, resulting in a completely rubberized muscle system. I haven’t been so tired in a long time. Later we biked to the store, around 2 miles round-trip, but on rubberized legs, it wasn’t too easy. But still I’m glad summer is here. According to SparkPeople, I burned around 1870 calories today. shock

I’m also working on a few books that I have wanted to read for a long time and only now getting around to it. (Thanks Drexel library):

Taking Back Islam - M. Wolfe (ed.) (read)
No god but God - R. Aslan (read)
Speaking in God’s Name - K. Abou El Fadl
Struggling to Surrender - J. Lang (of which the front pages of the book have been defaced by some idiot claiming that it contains “misguidance” and “blasphemy” — in a lovely red, girly script — and underlined and bracketed sections of the book. Ugh. Someone wasn’t paying attention in elementary school!)

P.S. damn world

Salam Leena, how do you like that bathing suit? does it stick to the body? Does it make you hot since it’s not cotton? What color did you choose? And how did you order it because the site doesn’t have order info.

The suits from Hasema are very well made — I have one of their “earlier” styles, which you can see on the site in lime green. The one I bought is light blue with a white shirt.

The material (at least on my suit but I assume they make them all suitable) is very lightweight, yet still opaque. It does stick to the body slightly, but only when you first get out of the water, which is why they give you a loose shirt over the bodysuit, to cover the areas where clinging might appear less modest. It does not make me hot - actually the suit doesn’t add or subtract any temperature, it’s really very nicely made!

I bought it from Jelbab.com, they have a swimsuit section. Although they don’t carry my style anymore, the newer ones are probably even better!

I really liked the green on the hasema website… )
    how is the sizing?

Umm Maryam has an Islamic swimsuit too, made by some lady down there in Australia. Not sure if you can get them here, though.

‘Struggling to Surrender’ *is* problematic from my POV, but even more for me is that I found it very negative and discouraging (I’ve found this in all of his books though, not just this one).

Umm Hamza — Sizing, hm, if you were to order from jelbab.com, they have a size chart. From hasema themselves, I don’t know. I ordered a large and I’m a little chubby but it fits me without being tight.

Umm Zaid — Struggling to Surrender was a little discouraging, (and from the titles of his books, I can tell that he runs on the cynical/negative side) but I didn’t find anything he said that was untrue, as it was only his observation. Nor did I see any blasphemy or misguidance. It wasn’t meant to be a religious book, so it didn’t contain any religious directives.

I don’t really mind that other people may hate the guy and think his book was a piece of trash, I just have problems with people who deface library books. :-P

nooo…. i stopped the read the other comments and forgot what i wanted to say!!! i can only remember it really wasn’t anything that important… hehe

oh, and i clicked on one of the links to read on one of the books - and saw this ad that screamed ‘father’s day is this sunday!’ - and i so went into a panic ‘oh no it can’t be why havent we gotten dad anything’ - only to realize a few seconds ltr that father’s day in is november here… hehehe u should stop scaring me though! :b

and i personally think that *sometimes*, especially when u’re studying for an exam and the book is booooooring u, small comments from others who were just as bored when reading the book are kinda refreshing! q: (but underlinings can be disturbing, especially if the person has chosen to emphasize things u think aren’t important at all… it’s like, ’should i think this is crucial? why dont i think this is crucial? omg what if im getting this all wrong???!’ (u can tell i havent read anything for any other reason that exams in a looooong time…. sowy :b))

Leena, for some Muslims, the fact that someone is writing in English is blasphemy. Or maybe the fact that he’s talking bout how not all Mozzies are perfect. Or maybe it’s b/c of other things he’s said that led that enlightened person to do that. You know, the whole “duty” they have to make sure you’re not on misguidance, even if it means defacing public property… sigh.

You know what’s interesting? Most of the books I have read that were defaced were defaced by racists and neo-cons… LOL

  8. Leena on Jun. 14th, 2006 at 9:09pm

Salam, Umm Zaid - Yeah, the “some” element is always there — weirdos and those without concern for rules. The duty, oh yeah, that too… lol

Thankfully I haven’t come across too many defaced books (I thought it only happened in high schools… :-|) but I can imagine that racists and neo-cons would be more likely than most to deface not only books but everything else.

Saara - I found a lot of the underlined and bracketed sections in this book to be completely non-crucial. I often re-read bits to be sure I wasn’t missing out on something. But I wasn’t. :-)
