Tyra Show on Racism
A few thoughts I jotted down while watching Racism: Who Has It Worse?
- “Muslim” is not a race. [Tyra made this mistake.]
- “Middle Easterns” (I could swear she said this) = Muslims?? [She later corrected herself and asked the “Muslim” part of the audience for clarification.]
- The question, “Who has it worse?” seems a bit like a contest to me. If one group has it “worse” then the others have to shut up? Like the woman who said “you [Muslim] have had to face discrimination for two years, and we [blacks] have had it for 200 years?” i.e. your discrimination is not real?
- Seriously, the white girl on the show was amusing. I noticed she only showed up in the beginning, obviously no one believed that a white person could be a victim of racism. (The audience laughed at her.)
- It was also funny to see people admitting their ignorance and even calling their silly prejudices a result of “brainwashing.” At least they acknowledge it…
- I wonder if, like, Tyra ever did, like, a show, like, about, like, how many, like, young women, like, talk LIKE THIS! AGGGHHH!!!
- The expert on the show stated: “We’re all the same.” Everyone, even the people who had previously spouted and supported stereotypical beliefs about others, agreed.
- Is it a “supermodel thing” to believe that if you hug someone, their problems go away?

Ah, never watched her. Besides the fact that you could land an airplane on her forhead, I dont think it would be too interesting. I think your post proved it.
Oprah is bad enough! Tyra? No way.
Nice blog, came across it by chance (we share the same name).
Tyra is just a superficial person…what more can we expect from her
LOL. That’s quite amusing…Tyra is quite the, how should I say, slow. She thinks she’s smart, but can’t speak above an eighth grade level. I must admit though, that everyone is affected by some sort of prejudice and just because one has lasted longer than another one, doesn’t mean that it’s any less valid. I’d dare say that people of Arab, Persian, Middle-Eastern decents haven’t known racism but for a few years…more like a few hundred. Since time began, one group has always thought to be superior than another, for whatever reason, and no amount of common sense about the issue will change that. It’s sad to say it will always be that way, until more people realize that we are the same, regardless of ideology, race or any other condition. At the end of the day, we all need food, water and shelter, and we’re all 99.9 percent identical anyways, so what’s the diff?
Just my rambling musing…tell me to shut up at any point.
Love ya Leena! I didn’t know that you were in over the weekend, would loved to have seen you..of course, I was in the middle of no where, watching the animals while the rents and Brit were at the beach. -.-
Very funny review. I saw just about a minute of that show when the hijabi was speaking about why she wears it and then the non-hijabi sister began speaking and I had to go.
Hi, Im Angela, the asian girl that was on the show, and I have to say I was quite upset with the show! First of all I was soooo excited that they were going to air it on sept 11 and on the commercial for it it says, white, black, muslim, latino. WHERE DID THE ASIANS GO???? Plus I only spoke once, not even getting to how i get discriminated. It was rediculous, THEN on the opening of the show Tyra shows people racing in a marathon, what does that have to do with anything! Also it was true, Phala was awesome, but for real Muslim isnt a race it is a religion. But that is mostly what got the show, when myself, Tatiana (the latino) and Brittany (the caucasion) said barely anything to explain why we get discriminated.
I know Im very late, but I saw the promo for this show, and missed it again!!!! I did a google to find out more about the episode, and you came up in the search, I just wanted to give salaams, and say thanks for tackling this on your blog. I think Tyra did a good thing by at least using her platform to address the issue. I went to her site and Muslim women all over the world wrote in to thank her, I was quite impressed. I would love to do a show on Muslim women, Insha’Allah you will call in.
