Wish I could go. I was going to drive to see Shayka Amina of the Jerrahi order later this month but I probably won’t have the time for that either, plus there’s a good chance I’m returning to China in June and should probably watch my finances.
I’m not a fan of “secular Islamic” conferences, since they seem to be part of the “Islam sucks!” movement, but heretical Islam, I’m cool with since I’m a heretic by the standard of like 95% of Sunnis and 90% of Shia. I used to be pretty Orthodox, but I can’t do it anymore, it means lying to myself and others. Orthodox Islam, while not inherently evil, is a manmade construct just like the religious practices Muhammad originally condemned. I don’t have much use for it anymore. Also, I don’t care these days what people are doing; I just had a phone conversation with Gus Mustafa, who’s a gay secular Persian nationalist psuedo-Muslim, the kind of person I used to just consider abominable, and it was actually a fun, engaging conversation. Meanwhile, I mentioned Shia around a friend of mine the other day when we were getting coffee and he, being Mr. Sunni, goes on this hate-filled, shocking rant about them and drops a k-bomb. I know which one I prefer now.

I’m not a fan of the islam-hating/secular stuff either, like the thing in Florida a while back. As far as I know, the people at this conference are not like that, they’re just “non-orthodox” like you said. Which is good! :-)
Sorry to hear about your friend.. :-/ I used to be brainwashed quite a bit, myself. I’m glad I stopped short of becoming a totally hateful troll type and I try not to be around those types just to be safe.
